AI & Nutrition Disclaimer
Last updated: March 3, 2026
CalScanner uses artificial intelligence to estimate nutritional content from food photographs. Please read this disclaimer carefully before relying on any results provided by the App.
AI-Generated Estimates
All calorie, macronutrient (protein, carbohydrates, fats), and fiber values displayed in CalScanner are estimates generated by an AI model analyzing a photograph of your food. These values are not measured, weighed, or verified against laboratory analysis. They represent the AI model's best approximation based on visual information only.
Factors That Affect Accuracy
Nutritional estimates may vary significantly based on:
- Image quality and clarity — blurry or dark photos produce less reliable results.
- Lighting conditions — artificial lighting, shadows, or glare can distort how food appears.
- Portion size perception — the AI estimates portion size from the image, which may not reflect the actual weight or volume.
- Hidden or obscured ingredients — sauces, fillings, dressings, or ingredients beneath the surface cannot be visually detected.
- Food presentation — the same dish plated differently may produce different estimates.
- Homemade vs. commercial preparation — ingredient ratios and cooking methods vary widely.
- Food overlaps — stacked or mixed foods may not be individually recognized.
Not a Substitute for Professional Advice
CalScanner is a general wellness tool designed to help you develop awareness of your nutritional intake. It is not a medical device, clinical tool, or certified nutrition analysis system.
Do NOT use CalScanner to:
- Manage diabetes, kidney disease, heart conditions, or any medical condition requiring precise dietary control.
- Identify or avoid allergens — the AI cannot reliably detect specific allergens such as nuts, gluten, dairy, shellfish, or soy.
- Replace guidance from a registered dietitian, nutritionist, or physician.
- Make critical health or safety decisions.
Variability Between Scans
Scanning the same food item multiple times may produce slightly different results each time. This is a normal characteristic of AI-based estimation and does not indicate a malfunction. For the most consistent results, use well-lit, clear, top-down photographs with the entire food item visible.
Nutritional Labels Are More Reliable
Whenever packaged food with a nutrition facts label is available, we strongly recommend using the label values instead of the AI scan. Manufacturer-provided labels are based on laboratory analysis and regulatory standards, making them significantly more accurate than visual AI estimation.
